Senegal
The Climate
The climate of Senegal is tropical, with two seasons: dry and rainy
- January, February, March, April, May, November and December are the dry season
- Avoid the month of August, which is very rainy
- The rainy season lasts from June to October
The dry season lasts from November to May. During this period, temperatures are around 26°C, the sun is shining and rains are rare. This is the best time to travel to Senegal.
The rainy season, between June and October, brings heat and rain. The thermometer climbs to 30°C and the rains make their appearance. These rains do not last very long and usually give way to a generous sun.
The temperature of the sea varies between 20°C during the dry season and 28°C during the rainy season.
The Senegalese
The Senegalese people are divided into about thirty national languages, the six most important of which are Polof, Peul, Serer, Diola, Malinke and Soninke.
Wolof is the most widely spoken (national) language, and French is the official (administrative) language. In Senegal, 94% of the population is Muslim, 5% is Christian (Catholic, Protestant) and 1% is traditional. The law guarantees religious freedom.
The population for the year 2020 is 16,705,608, an increase of about 3% compared to the year 2019. The number of women (8,391,358, or 50.2%) is slightly higher than the number of men (8,314,250, or 49.8%).
The Children
The situation of children in Senegal, as in many West African countries, remains critical despite an improving economic situation. The phenomenon of begging (talibé children) greatly affects children, in addition to low school enrollment rates. Children represent about half of the population (7.6 million). In 2016, only 39% of boys and 42% of girls were enrolled in secondary school.
In addition to talibé children, some are forced to live on the streets after running away or leaving home. Given this situation, the children need assistance to enable them to have a better future.
